Steel preservation for the Ameland spring mechanism

Steel preservation for the Ameland spring mechanism

Every car and passenger arriving on Ameland by boat comes ashore via the ferry terminal structure. Steel subjected to such intensive use—and exposed to salt water and sea air day in, day out—requires a protective coating system capable of withstanding these conditions. Commissioned by SPIE, SealteQ carried out the work on the ferry terminal structure.

The vehicle bridge and the pedestrian bridges were treated at SealteQ’s workshop. First, the old wearing course was removed and the bridges were fully abrasive-blasted. Subsequently, a high-quality protective coating system was applied, and the bridges were fitted with new wearing courses. Working in the workshop means we are not dependent on weather conditions or tides, and this is reflected in the quality of the final result.

The mooring piles, bollards, and other steel components were treated on the island itself. Working in an active ferry port required close coordination with sailing schedules to ensure the boats could continue operating without interruption.

The team is currently putting the finishing touches to the work. This ensures the Ameland ferry infrastructure is protected against corrosion for years to come. It is a great job at a unique work location.

Staalconservering veerinrichting Ameland
