Steel Preservation

Steel Preservation

The lifespan of a steel structure largely depends on its protection against corrosion. Without preservation, steel is susceptible to rust formation and loses its mechanical strength over time. SealteQ specializes in preserving steel, both on-site and in our own preservation facilities. By using high-quality techniques and strict process management, we protect steel structures against environmental influences for extended periods.

We carry out steel preservation for various applications: from bridges, locks, and storage tanks to pipelines, facades, and steel structures in critical environments such as hospitals and industrial installations. In doing so, we combine craftsmanship with innovation, always focusing on safety, sustainability, and quality.

Why is steel preservation necessary?

Steel is a strong and versatile construction material, but it is also sensitive to corrosion when exposed to oxygen and moisture. This rust formation attacks the material from within and can lead to galvanic corrosion, delamination of coatings, and ultimately structural weakening.

Steel preservation is intended to stop or prevent this process. By, among other things, coating steel, the surface is sealed off from external influences. This keeps the structure safe, stable, and aesthetically in good condition, with lower maintenance costs in the long term.

Our approach: from inspection to sustainable protection

1. Inspection and advice

Every preservation process starts with a thorough inspection. We assess, among other things:

  • The current condition of the steel structure
  • The mechanical load (e.g., vibrations or traffic load)
  • Environmental factors, such as indoor or outdoor environment, atmospheric load (moisture, UV, air pollution) and contact with chemicals or marine climate

Based on this, we recommend a preservation system that complies with the NEN-EN-ISO 12944 standard and fits the desired lifespan.

2. Surface treatment

Effective preservation begins with proper surface treatment of steel. Depending on the object and location, we apply techniques including steel blasting. This technique removes old layers and contaminants and creates a rough surface for optimal adhesion. Chemical pre-treatments such as zinc phosphating and passivation are also among the possibilities.

3. Application of preservation systems

After pre-treatment, we apply the chosen preservation system. This can consist of one or more layers of coating, ranging from primers to final finishes. We use solvent-free coatings, hot-spray techniques, and where necessary, fire-resistant systems to make steel fire-resistant. Layer thickness and adhesion are continuously monitored. Our quality assurance is guaranteed by NACE-certified inspectors.

Our methods for steel preservation

Powder Coating

Powder coating steel is an efficient preservation method for smaller objects or serial applications. The steel is electrically charged and then coated with a powder layer, which cures in an oven. Powder coatings are strong, scratch-resistant, and applicable in various colors and thicknesses.

Please note: SealteQ does not have its own powder coating installation or cabin, but applies this technique in collaboration with regular partners.

Hot-dip Galvanizing

Hot-dip galvanizing steel is a sustainable way to protect steel against corrosion for extended periods. In this process, the steel is immersed in a bath of molten zinc. The zinc layer forms a barrier against oxygen and moisture and provides cathodic protection in case of damage. Hot-dip galvanized steel is excellently resistant to outdoor conditions.

Although we do not perform the hot-dip galvanizing ourselves, we work closely with reliable galvanizing companies. This way, we can offer a complete process: from advice to preservation.

Duplex Systems

In a duplex system, steel is first galvanized and then coated. The combination significantly extends the lifespan and offers both functional protection and aesthetic finishing. Ideal for bridges and facades that are subject to heavy loads.

Steel preservation on-site or in our workshops

On-site

Thanks to our mobile equipment, we can preserve steel at any location in the Netherlands. Our mobile preservation units are equipped with:

  • Mobile blasting and spraying equipment
  • Metallizing installations (including Thermal Sprayed Aluminium)
  • Extraction and filter units (including dust reduction and ventilation)
  • Power generators
  • Lighting and communication equipment

This makes steel preservation possible in operational environments such as hospitals or factories, without prolonged downtime or disruption of processes.

In our Workshops

For projects that benefit from controlled conditions, we have two fully equipped preservation halls in Bergum and Bergharen. Here we perform surface treatment, metallizing, and coating with maximum control over quality, layer thickness, and adhesion. Our halls are suitable for large steel structures and are equipped with advanced spraying and lifting installations.

Applications of steel preservation

Steel preservation is applied in various sectors, including infrastructure, industry, and utility construction. Common locations include:

  • Bridges and viaducts
  • Locks and quays
  • Storage tanks and pipelines
  • Facade systems and canopies
  • Structures in hospitals, factories, and government buildings

Both new and existing structures can be treated, depending on their condition and the desired maintenance interval.

Roof Works Groninger Museum Completed

The Groninger Museum is renowned for its iconic and distinctive architecture. Since its opening in 1994, designed by Italian architect Alessandro Mendini, the building has become a cultural landmark in the city of Groningen. To preserve this exceptional heritage, regular restoration and maintenance work is carried out. Recently, the museum's roof has been preserved and successfully completed.

3,000m² steel preservation job Groningen

In Groningen, the specialists from SealteQ Noord are working on an extensive steel conservation project. The project, covering an area of no less than 3,000 m², focuses on conserving the entire steel structure of the building. This requires not only technical expertise but also a meticulous approach that characterizes our team.

Renovation of Ter Apel lift bridge

We are currently working on a noteworthy project for our client DJK Structures. This project brings together many of our disciplines. The specialists from SealteQ North are working on the Barnflair Bridge.

Maintenance Coop Himmelb(l)au pavilion Groninger museum

As you exit Groningen Central Station, you can't miss it: the Groninger Museum. A remarkable building, designed by Alessandro Mendini in collaboration with other artists, designers, and architects. Mendini invited three guest architects to design their 'own' pavilions, including Coop Himmelb(l)au from Vienna.

New conservation system artwork the Kringel

The Van Heekplein is a square in the city center of Enschede. This square was created as part of the post-war urban renewal. Now, you can find the shopping heart of Enschede on and around this square. There are many stores of well-known retail chains, and every Tuesday and Saturday there is a market. The artwork 'De Kringel' is also located on this square.

Maintenance of parking garage P + R Kralingse Zoom

Our branches SealteQ West and SealteQ MCB have joined forces in executing a major project in Rotterdam. Together they are working on the maintenance of the P+R Kralingse Zoom parking garage. This is a large parking garage with 1,700 parking spaces, distributed across 6 floors.

A solid foundation for a nitrogen plant

Heavy steel structures and machine foundations are more stable and stronger when the forces released are better distributed across their substrate. This also applies to the structures of a new nitrogen factory in Zuidbroek, Groningen. SealteQ Noord was commissioned to undergrout all steel structures and machine foundations of the factory. An enormous task that requires significant flexibility in planning.

IJplein ferry: a new bridge for cyclists and pedestrians

As the Amsterdam ferries across the IJ river become increasingly busy, the Municipality of Amsterdam decided to install a brand-new bicycle and pedestrian bridge. SealteQ Noord's specialists are applying a coating system and a wear layer to the deck of the new IJpleinveer bridge, ensuring it will last for many years.
