The renovation consists of two parts:
- Beens Groep is removing the current steel deck plates and will later replace them with durable plastic deck plates.
- SealteQ Noord thoroughly cleans and removes rust from the existing bridge frame and then applies a triple protective coating.
The project presented a unique challenge: the bridge turns out to be a favorite nesting site for both the protected barn swallow and the common swallow. To avoid disturbing the birds during the nesting season, the painting work could only begin later in the season. With some sunshine still available, the protective coating work is being completed this week, after which Beens Groep will take over to install the new bridge deck. The bridge is expected to be fully completed by December.
Once completed, the Koopvaardersbrug will be structurally sound again, featuring a preserved steel frame and a new, low-maintenance synthetic deck. This ensures the bridge remains safe for use by the Oostvaardersbuurt community for years to come.
