Concrete repair to drainage pipes on the Afsluitdijk

Concrete repair to drainage pipes on the Afsluitdijk

The discharge pipes at Kornwerderzand are an essential part of the drainage system for the IJsselmeer. Without these pipes, the Afsluitdijk would not function. The structure is almost 100 years old and was designed by Ir. Lely, an icon of Dutch hydraulic engineering.

During inspections, damage to the concrete was identified: loose sections of concrete, cracking and corroded reinforcement. Following an analysis of the damage mechanisms, a repair plan was drawn up, and SealteQ carried out the repairs to a high standard.

The approach consisted of several steps. First, the damaged areas were exposed and loose parts removed. The reinforcement was derusted, treated against corrosion and replenished where necessary. Shotcrete was then applied, creating a strong and durable bond with the existing concrete. Additional reinforcement was added at critical points to strengthen the structural integrity of the repairs.

The discharge pipe is now once again able to withstand strong water currents, the effects of the weather and the salty environment. This has significantly extended its service life.

Concrete repair to the cooling water channel at Geertruidenberg

In Geertruidenberg, Balm – part of the SealteQ Group – is working on the repair of the cooling water channel used to supply and drain cooling water to and from the cooling tower. Following the partial renovation of the cooling tower last year, it is now the turn of the concrete in the cooling water channel to undergo a sustainable repair treatment.
