What is concrete repair mortar?

Concrete repair mortar is a specially developed material used to repair concrete. It is usually a mixture of cement, sand, and other additives such as polymers. Concrete can become damaged due to concrete decay, weather, or aging. Thanks to concrete repair mortar, it becomes strong and solid again. It acts like a special glue for concrete.

The Benefits of Concrete Repair Mortar

These are the main reasons why concrete repair mortar is used in concrete work:

  • Durable: concrete repair mortar is a very strong material and withstands various conditions well. As a result, concrete repair mortar ensures that the repaired concrete lasts a long time without quickly breaking again.
  • Fast curing: after applying concrete repair mortar, it dries quickly. This means you don’t have to wait long before the repaired concrete is fully usable again.
  • Good mixing: concrete repair mortar mixes well with existing concrete. This ensures a smooth and uniform surface after the repair.
  • Preventing further damage: using concrete repair mortar helps prevent further damage to the concrete. It forms a protective layer that makes the concrete extra strong.
  • Improved lifespan: due to the durability and protection it offers, concrete repair mortar contributes to a longer lifespan of the concrete surface. It is an investment in the future strength and stability of the concrete.

How to use concrete repair mortar?

Whether you are a professional craftsman or an enthusiastic DIYer, concrete repair mortar is accessible to everyone.

When using concrete repair mortar, proper preparation of the damaged areas is important. Ensure that the broken pieces of concrete are thoroughly clean. Why? Because a clean surface ensures that the repair mortar adheres better and can do its job. Then apply the concrete repair mortar evenly to the damaged areas.

It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions to achieve the best results. This tells you exactly how to mix and apply the concrete repair mortar, ensuring an effective repair.

Tips for Choosing the Right Concrete Repair Mortar

When choosing the right concrete repair mortar, there are a few important things to keep in mind.

  1. Type of damage: consider what type of damage the concrete has. Is the surface cracked, are pieces broken off, or are there other issues? Different repair mortars are designed for different types of damage. Read the information on the concrete repair mortar you are using for this.
  2. Environmental conditions: think about the environment of the concrete. Does it come into contact with a lot of moisture or extreme temperatures, such as very cold or very hot? In a cold environment, the curing of the concrete slows down, while in very warm environments, the process is accelerated. Too rapid curing causes the concrete to adhere less well, potentially leading to cracking. There are concrete repair mortars that are better suited for these types of environments.
  3. Curing time: check how long it takes for the repair mortar to fully harden. Sometimes it is convenient if this happens quickly, for example, if the concrete needs to be used again soon.

Common Mistakes

The mistakes often made when using concrete repair mortar include insufficient preparation. For example, the concrete may not be properly cleaned, or the manufacturer’s instructions may not be followed. The concrete repair mortar must be mixed and applied correctly (as indicated by the manufacturer). This way, for example, the repair of concrete decay can be successfully carried out.

Aftercare and Maintenance after Concrete Repair

After the concrete has been repaired, it is important to take good care of the surface. Regular inspections and cleaning keep the concrete in good condition. Also, avoid actions that can cause damage. Think of dropping heavy objects, using sharp tools, or aggressive chemicals.

Maintenance of Fregelaan parking garages in Amsterdam

In the recent period, we have been working on three parking garages on Fregelaan in Amsterdam. We have resolved water leakages, performed concrete repairs, and provided the ramps with a new wear layer. First, we addressed the leaks caused by the overhead roof gardens and walkways. We did this by incorporating all connections and details with a waterproof membrane. This involved the connection between the roof garden and the upstand, the joints of the coping stones, and the joints of the walkways and stairs.
