What is concrete repair?

Concrete repair is a technique used to repair damaged concrete. Concrete is a widely used building material because of its strength and durability, but it can wear out or become damaged over time. Concrete repair is the solution to address these problems and prevent further damage.

The importance of concrete repair

The importance of concrete repair cannot be overemphasized. Damaged concrete can compromise the stability and safety of a structure. By making repairs on time, serious problems such as concrete rot and structural damage can be prevented. Concrete repair and concrete rehabilitation can also extend the life of a concrete structure by reducing aging.

SealteQ works according to official guidelines and quality systems. We have all certificates and have regular checks and audits done by independent auditors to ensure that we continue to deliver quality as well.

The process of concrete repair

The process of concrete repair involves several steps.

  1. First, the damage is inspected and analyzed to determine the appropriate repair method.
  2. Then the damaged concrete is removed by chopping, sawing or blasting.
  3. After cleaning the surface repaired. The repair consists of, for example, concrete injection, cathodic protection, carbon reinforcement or repair with sprayed concrete or repair mortar.
  4. Finally, the repaired concrete is protected with an appropriate coating.

In addition to repairing damaged concrete, concrete rehabilitation can also be used to improve the structural strength of concrete structures. This may be necessary, for example, when a building is being renovated or when changes are made to the load on the structure. In these cases, strengthening the concrete using the aforementioned methods can restore the structure to suit the new load.

Types of concrete repairs in Groningen

Different types of concrete repairs are performed in Groningen, depending on the nature and extent of the damage. The two most common types are surface repairs and structural repairs.

Surface repairs

Surface repairs are performed to repair minor damage to the surface of concrete. These may include cracks, chipping or other forms of wear and tear. By applying repair mortars or spray concrete when repairing a concrete floor, for example, the damaged surface can be repaired and the structure returned to optimal condition.

Structural repairs

Structural repairs are more complex and are performed when the structural integrity of concrete is damaged. These include concrete rot, where the concrete is affected by chlorides, or reinforcement corrosion from carbonation, where the reinforcement (the metal rods in concrete) rust. Structural repairs include removing and replacing damaged concrete, as well as strengthening the structure.

Common problems with concrete in Groningen

There are common problems that occur with concrete. Two of the most common problems are concrete rot and cracking.

Concrete rot and how to treat it

Concrete rot is a serious problem caused by the deterioration of concrete by chlorides or carbonation. This can lead to corrosion of the reinforcement and eventually collapse of the structure. Treating concrete rot involves removing and replacing the affected concrete, repairing the reinforcement and applying protective coatings.

Cracks in concrete and their solutions

Cracks often occur in concrete structures due to stresses, temperature changes or improper construction. Fixing cracks involves repairing them by injection of epoxy resin or applying special repair mortars. It is important to address cracks in a timely manner to prevent further damage.

Preserving concrete in Groningen

Taking preventive concrete preservation measures prevents concrete problems and extends the life of concrete structures.

The importance of regular inspections

Regular inspections of concrete structures ensure that damage or problems are detected in time. By noticing cracks, flaking or other signs of wear, repairs can be made in time, preventing larger problems.

Tips for maintaining concrete structures

Maintaining concrete structures includes:

  • Cleaning surfaces to prevent accumulation of dirt and corrosive substances.
  • Inspecting the concrete structure for cracks and other signs of damage. Applying protective coatings also helps increase the durability of concrete structures.

SealteQ strengthens FC Groningen: stadium renovation begins

For the next two years, SealteQ will be working for FC Groningen. Unfortunately, not in the first team; we gladly leave that to the football professionals. In April 2021, we began renovating the steel roof structure of the stadium in Groningen. By the end of 2022, the roof of the Hitachi Capital Mobility Stadium – still commonly known as the Euroborg – will have a new coating. Project leader Marcel Vrijs takes us through the preparation.

Facade maintenance Groninger Museum

The Groninger Museum, an architectural gem adorning the skyline of Groningen, is undergoing major facade maintenance from April to July 2024. This project, aimed at preserving the museum's appearance, is being carried out by our specialists from SealteQ Noord, commissioned by the Municipality of Groningen.

Maintenance Coop Himmelb(l)au pavilion Groninger museum

As you exit Groningen Central Station, you can't miss it: the Groninger Museum. A remarkable building, designed by Alessandro Mendini in collaboration with other artists, designers, and architects. Mendini invited three guest architects to design their 'own' pavilions, including Coop Himmelb(l)au from Vienna.

3,000m² steel preservation job Groningen

In Groningen, the specialists from SealteQ Noord are working on an extensive steel conservation project. The project, covering an area of no less than 3,000 m², focuses on conserving the entire steel structure of the building. This requires not only technical expertise but also a meticulous approach that characterizes our team.
