Work on the Hofgarage and Werfgarage in Amsterdam

The Hofgarage and the Werfgarage, two car parks on the outskirts of the Kattenburg district in Amsterdam, date from 1975. Given their age and the need for modernisation, Balm carried out an extensive refurbishment of both buildings, addressing the structural, architectural and technical aspects of both the interior and exterior.

During preparations for the Major Maintenance, a serious structural problem was discovered in the garage roofs: corrosion of the reinforcement. The garages have a rather unique roof slab structure consisting of in-situ concrete on concrete columns, using ‘non-bonded prestressing tendons’ (VZA reinforcement). As the strength of these floor structures will diminish in the future due to tendon failure resulting from this corrosion, immediate repair or reinforcement was necessary.

The work involves:

  • Reinforcing columns with steel structures and replacing post-tensioning cables.
  • Diverse betonreparaties en het schilderen van kolommen en wanden.
  • Replacing the lighting with LED and installing a fire alarm system.
  • Refreshing the design and refurbishing the entrance, both inside and out.

Curious how we can further assist you with your project?
