Southern jetty Bonaire

Southern jetty Bonaire

SealteQ has been commissioned to structurally reinforce the Kralendijk jetty on Bonaire. The assignment was awarded by Bouwcombinatie Bonaire. The jetty is used by cruise ships and for island freight. SealteQ is implementing a life-extension solution by utilizing bonded carbon reinforcement (approx. 8,000 m) for the concrete deck's reinforcement. The underside will be reinforced with fiberglass reinforcement. The pile foundations beneath the deck will be protected with newly installed polyester casings.

Update: Progress of Durability Enhancement Works

The work is proceeding smoothly; for instance, the reinforcement of the concrete deck with carbon reinforcement has already been completed. On the underside of the pier, with a working space of only 1.40 m, significant concrete damages (reinforcement corrosion) are being repaired, and existing reinforcement is partially being replaced by glass fiber reinforcement. Glass and carbon reinforcement are impervious to corrosion caused by the saline environment.

Demolition work is being carried out by a remote-controlled mini demolition robot. From an occupational health and safety perspective, this is an advanced solution compared to manual demolition. The steel pile foundations beneath the pier are also being enhanced for durability with a protection system.

Pier Lifespan Significantly Extended after Durability Enhancement Measures

As a result of these works, the lifespan of the pier will be extended for a period of 30 – 40 years.
