The N31, also known as the Wâldwei, is the main connection between Leeuwarden and Drachten. An important link between the provinces of Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe. Due to the need for smooth and safe traffic flow between the provinces, the N31 was widened to a dual carriageway some time ago. However, the asphalt on the 13-kilometer stretch between Hemriksein and Nijega was due for renewal, an excellent project for which SealteQ was commissioned to replace the expansion joints of the N31.

Construction of the Expansion Joints
The work related to replacing the expansion joints started after the new asphalt was applied. This is necessary for the proper connection of the joint with the new asphalt. The expansion joint is constructed in the following steps: First, the expansion joint is sealed using a closed cell structure. A thermally galvanized plate is applied on top of this, after which a bitumen joint filling is applied after primer, which is then rolled, sealed and sanded. These new bituminous joints were made by our bitumen specialists. We have an extensive fleet of our own equipment to carry out this work in-house. With the new expansion joints, the N31 is equipped with good transitions for the coming years.
