Renovation toddler pool at Moekesgat swimming pool in Ter Apel

On April 17, SealteQ successfully delivered another appealing project—the renovation of a toddler pool—to the Municipality of Westerwolde. It was appealing because this assignment was just a little different. In addition to the technical renovation of the toddler pool at the Moekesgat swimming pool, our colleagues at SealteQ Noord also enhanced its appearance. The pool was adorned with various sea creatures. Extra playtime fun is guaranteed for the very youngest.

Maintenance work

With good weather on the way, the pool needed to be put back into use quickly. Due to issues with the toddler pool’s tiled floor, that would not have been possible. SealteQ devised a sustainable solution, which first required removing all tiles from the pool—both from the floor and the walls. Everything was then leveled and prepared for application by installing a moisture barrier suitable for damp substrates. Without this special coating, there is a risk of osmosis and subsequent disbondment (blistering). Next, a three-layer, two-component acrylate–polyurethane coating system, specifically designed for swimming pools, was applied. This coating is available in various colors—something to suit every preference. Finally, for decoration, the sea creatures were hand-painted onto the newly applied coating using stencils. Following the maintenance work, the Moekesgat toddler pool is ready for many years of use again.

Risks

Proper preparation also includes identifying all risks. As part of the preparation, the Municipality of Westerwolde provided the tent structure. Work carried out in the open air always comes with a risk: the weather. Rain causes moisture ingress and condensation in the coating. The coating will then not cure properly, increasing the risk of disbondment. A robust tent structure is therefore essential during coating works. The structure used performed excellently.

Timing of Swimming Pool Renovations

A swimming pool cannot be renovated year-round. During the swimming season, it is not desirable to carry out renovations. In practice, there are two suitable windows each year: immediately after the season ends and in spring (February/March). As a rule, King’s Day is used as the deadline, because pools generally reopen around then. With the right planning and materials, SealteQ makes many pools safe again and ready for hours of swimming enjoyment. For example, we have just completed works at the Wotterwille swimming pool in Marum as well. We have also started preparations for renovating the Hoogkerk swimming pool.
