New wearing course of bridges Den Helder

New wearing course of bridges Den Helder

In the municipality of Den Helder, the specialists from SealteQ Ivacon (Amsterdam) have provided two bridge decks with a new, durable wear layer. This was done on behalf of construction company Klein Wieringen. In the past, we have repaired bridges and provided new wear layers in the same municipality on several occasions.

This time, it concerned the bridges at Fluytstraat and Duindreeft. The bridge at Fluytstraat consists of hardwood deck planks and is constructed with a black traffic lane and a red pedestrian path. At Duindreeft, there is a steel pedestrian bridge with an entirely red wear layer. Before we started our work, we created a catchment structure under the bridge using tarpaulins. This was to ensure that no material would end up in the surface water during the work.

The wear layers on the bridges were worn out and partially coming loose. Therefore, they were first thoroughly sanded with diamond and then cleaned. For each type of surface, in this case wood and steel, a suitable primer layer was applied to guarantee adhesion to the substrate. We leveled out irregularities in the surface with a spatula for a smooth end result. Subsequently, a heavy-duty poured floor was applied as a wear layer, which was immediately and fully sprinkled with colored crushed stone in the gradation of 1 to 3 mm. After this layer had sufficiently cured, the excess crushed stone was removed, and we finished everything with a transparent top coat to increase mechanical protection.

To minimize inconvenience as much as possible, we used products with very rapid curing based on PMMA. Moreover, the applied system is mechanically highly durable, slip-resistant, and resistant to weather and de-icing salt.
