Painting bridges while waterway remains open
The trade magazine Concrete & Steel Construction recently interviewed our project manager who was responsible for the work at the sea lock complex in Farmsum. The major maintenance job for the Farmsum Bridge was a “mission impossible.” Nevertheless, SealteQ managed to deliver on its promise to Van de Herik – SPIE, de-rusting the bridges in three weeks and re-applying a three-layer coating system.
Three-layer coating system
Before the bridges could be repainted, the old coat of paint had to be removed. Before removing the old paint layer, blasting work was performed. The bridges were first cleaned and de-rusted to P St 3. then the bridges were repainted with a 3 layer coating system from PPG.
Because the waterway remained open
, resulting in 50 to 100 passing ships per day. Work had to be done in a different way. Because of this, it was decided to carry out the work both during the day and at night. To minimize inconvenience to the waterway. It was decided to paint the top of the drawbridge from the side using an aerial platform.
As a result of the three-layer coating system, the lifespan of the bridges has been significantly extended.
