SealteQ strengthens homes in the earthquake-affected region using QuakeShield. QuakeShield is a lightweight solution for earthquake-resistant construction and was developed by the Groningen-based companies SealteQ and Royal Oosterhof Holman.
It is a patented, lightweight solution that can strengthen masonry both preventively and as a retrofit, with a short lead time and an attractive cost profile. The solution—which comfortably meets the current standard for earthquake-resistant new construction (NPR)—is scientifically validated by TU Delft and Eindhoven University of Technology.
QuakeShield’s unique system works as follows: first, grooves are milled into the wall to install carbon fiber strips (eight times stronger than steel), which are filled with a specially developed tough, elastic adhesive. Next, a carbon fiber reinforcement mesh is applied to one side. Finally, it is finished with a cementitious or polymer reinforcement layer. By installing the carbon fiber reinforcement from one side of the wall, the innovative system can strengthen both faces of the masonry.
