Leaks were detected in the expansion joint of the open section of the Boxemtunnel aqueduct on the N331. At low temperatures, freezing caused a risk of slipping for road users, which is why it was important to stop the leaks.
The leaks were located in both tunnel walls at a height of approximately 4 meters. Investigations revealed that the collapsed sealing profile at that height was leaking on both sides.
The Boxemtunnel was constructed between November 2012 and mid-2014, commissioned by the Municipality of Zwolle, and is now owned and managed by the Province of Overijssel.
To remedy the leak, SealteQ carried out repair work using a curtain injection with a waterproof, polymer-reinforced injection gel. This work took place over two weekends, with both sides of the tunnel being treated separately.
At two pre-determined locations per leak, injection holes were drilled into the concrete at an angle to a depth of approximately 75 cm. Subsequently, the joint was carefully filled with a special injection resin. The leak was successfully sealed, and the watertightness of the tunnel was restored.
With this approach, SealteQ has ensured the tunnel’s service life and safety, allowing traffic on the N331 to once again make unhindered use of this important connection between Zwolle and Hasselt.
