Bridge maintenance Leeuwarden municipality

Bridge maintenance Leeuwarden municipality

Commissioned by the Municipality of Leeuwarden, SealteQ has started the large-scale renovation work on the movable bridges in Leeuwarden. In total, SealteQ will carry out life-extending maintenance on twelve bridges. Due to overdue maintenance, the quality of the bridges has deteriorated in recent years and it is time for life-extending maintenance. The maintenance will consist of concrete repairs, repair of pavement structures being wearing courses and conservation work.

Blokhuisbrug

The life-extending maintenance will start at the Blokhuisbrug. This is the first bridge that SealteQ will treat to extend its lifespan. The maintenance will consist of securing the loose steps of the staircase that leads to the platform of the hydraulic cellar. The lime-bearing cracks will also be repaired. The cause of lime-bearing cracks is water leakage. Before the cracks can be repaired using a synthetic resin injection fluid, the cause of the water leakage must first be eliminated.

Verlaatsbrug

The second bridge of phase 1 to be treated by SealteQ is the Verlaatsbrug. The Verlaatsburg is a bascule bridge with concrete damage at the bottom of the bridge. The concrete damage is the result of reinforcement corrosion. Another concrete damage that occurs with this bridge is damage to the pier of the back harp. This is the result of a collision. This will be worked on from a pontoon. Subsequently, both concrete damages are chopped away to behind the reinforcement. The reinforcement is then blasted. Finally, the repair mortar will be applied to protect both the bridge and the pier.

When the aforementioned activities have been completed, SealteQ will start with Phase 2. This consists of maintenance work on the Hermes and Eebrug.

Update May 2, 2019

After phase 1 of the maintenance plan has been carried out and completed, SealteQ has started with Phase 2 with the maintenance of the movable bridges in the Municipality of Leeuwarden. The maintenance will take place on the Hermes and Eebrug. Due to overdue maintenance, the quality of the bridges has deteriorated in recent years and it is time for life-extending maintenance. The maintenance will consist of concrete repairs, repair of pavement structures being wearing courses and conservation work.

Hermesbrug

Phase 2 of the maintenance has started at the Hermesbrug. This is the third bridge of a total of twelve bridges that SealteQ will treat to extend its lifespan. The maintenance will consist of repairing the approach bridges and pier walls. As a result of overdue maintenance, corrosion of the reinforcement has occurred in both the approach bridges and the pier walls. Corrosion of the reinforcement causes the concrete to crack from the inside. The result of cracks in the concrete is that the load-bearing capacity is considerably reduced. To repair the cracks, the problem must be tackled at the core. The reinforcement. To repair the reinforcement, the concrete damage has been chipped, cut and excavated to behind the reinforcement. The reinforcement was then blasted to remove the corrosion. The damage was made dust-free and, to complete the maintenance, a repair mortar was applied in accordance with the BRL3201 standard.

Eebrug

The second bridge that was treated by SealteQ during phase 2 is the Eebrug. The maintenance consists of repairing the top layer of the edge elements. The repair started with chipping, cutting and excavating to behind the reinforcement. The reinforcement was then blasted. The concrete beams were then poured. The concrete confinement of the back harp has also been replaced. Finally, the steps of the control house have been repaired with an injection fluid, as cracks had formed in the steps.

After the aforementioned activities have been fully completed, SealteQ will start with Phase 3. This Phase consists of maintenance work on the 2e Kanaals- and Hoeksterpoortbrug.
